Disaster Aid UK & Ireland held a training event on 24 – 26 April for 11 people who have committed to become part of our Disaster Aid Response Team (DARTS). Training is based on real life situations and carefully designed to be both extensive and intensive. However, the original training programme was over taken by events and amended at short notice to use the Nepal earthquake, which took place on the 25th, as a real life test case.
Trainees were able to have a genuine experience of how to obtain critical but limited information within the context of urgent life and death situations. The work was presented to Larry Agee and Darren Mayne, two of the top operations managers in the organisation, in the presence of Robert Strachan (Chairman of Disaster Aid UK & Ireland and board member of Disaster Aid International) and Nick Robinson, an experiences DART volunteer. The work was of such high quality that it was able to make a significant contribution to preparation for our forthcoming deployment in Nepal.
