Disaster Aid International has recently started a pilot project with Orphans and Vulnerable Children Project in Urban Slums of Africa.

The project is a water purification scheme designed to assist those living in and around the urban slums in Nairobi.

The water systems they have in place are constantly putting lives at risk from water borne diseases. Water is piped, through ruptured pipes often surrounded by open sewer drains, to one large holding tank where local people who live in the slums must pay to gain access to the water. Unfortunately the water they are paying for is not fit for human consumption and must be purified. This adds more of a cost to those needing water, and can often leave the water tasting foul and unpalatable. People are also worried about constantly drinking water mixed with chlorine and other ‘purification’ products in it.

Working alongside Orphans and Vulnerable Children Project, Disaster Aid International has started a pilot project that intends to provide free water purification to the slum residence, using the Sawyer water filters that we have previously successfully deployed into South Sudan schools, in and around Abyie.

The beauty of this system is that it does not add anything to the water. Racheal Nduku, the Project Co-ordinator for Orphans and Vulnerable Children Project said, “This is the first time that some of these people have drunk pure water, they have forgotten how it tastes”.

With your help and assistance we can provide more water filters to the Urban Slums, and we can continue to help save lives and better the living standards in and around the Slums.

DART Representatives from Disaster International has just returned from two deployments to Abyei. South Sudan where we distributed 400 shelters.

The forward operational team, of Larry Agee and Tore Knos, both USA DART (Disaster Aid Response Team) members, set in place a distribution plan working with the Abyei Administration, and Kush (kushworld.org) the USA based agency that focuses on Sudan and South Sudan.

In their time there Larry and Tore worked on identifying those in need of our aid package and also providing water filtration systems in Agok for schools and hospitals. Those identified have been displaced from their home lands due to conflict in 2011. In short their homes and communities had been totally destroyed, and the civilian population had been displaced to Agok and areas close to Agok.

With the presence of the UNISFA (Interim Security Force for Abyei), the displaced populations were eager to move back to their home lands. Disaster Aid International was there on hand with Kush World to provide shelter and non-food items so they could start the process of rebuilding their communities.

Once the negotiations and logistics had been focused on and addressed, a second team consisting of Nick Robinson (UK), Howard Bradfield (Australia) and myself, Ed Cox (UK) were deployed to carry out the actual distribution of our aid.

Working in Abyei is not an easy task. There are a lot of issues to address, all of which show the huge need for Disaster Aid Internationals aid and our water purification systems. All in all we distributed 400 shelters north of Agok in villages such as Mirial Achak, Lowe, Wunruok, and Mijak to name a few.

“The first thing that strikes you when you go to these communities is the fact that these people don’t want to live anywhere else, these people don’t want to be displaced”, Nick Robinson said. Indeed their communities have been here for hundreds of years, this is their ancestral home- land they farm, land where their ancestors are buried, and where they call home.

The DART teams worked extremely hard, something that is always humbling for me to see. Working in extreme weather conditions in the aftermath of a conflict, but always there, ready to work and without a single complaint.

Once we distributed our shelters it was amazing to see the communities starting to flourish again. Disaster Aid International is all about rebuilding communities, and admittedly I am in the luckiest position as I get to see real people, real communities starting to flourish again after events I only have to imagine. Without the hard work and donations from all over the world none of this is possible, I only wish I could convey to you the sheer enormity to a recipient of receiving one of our aid packages. You are doing more than providing a shelter, your enabling a community to thrive again.

Disaster Aid UK and Ireland, together with its international partners, is proud to report on how we , with the assistance of our generous donors, have and are making a difference to the people of Cagayan de Oro, the worst hit region following Cyclone Sendong in the Philippines.

Jenni Heenan, CEO of Disaster Aid Australia said, “with the incredible assistance of our partner on the ground, the Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc. (BMFI) www.balaymindanaw.org another not-for-profit organisation, our aid has been hailed as professional and exceptionally effective. None of this would have been possible without BMFI and their tireless volunteers, their connections to the Government, politicians, the Army, Air Force, locals affected by the Cyclone and many other groups.”

“Truck loads of volunteers have arrived every day to assist us in delivering our unique shelter in the form of our Family Survival Boxes, clearing land so survivors are housed with dignity,” Jenni said.

“With the assistance of other NGOs and volunteers we are also providing sanitation, water, education facilities, lighting. We are truly making a real difference – together,” Jenni said.

Congressman Rufus Rodriguez said, “Disaster Aid International are rebuilding our communities, not just putting up camps, and this is what we need.”

Monsignor Tex Lesimas said, “Social welfare of those affected by this disaster is so very important and now with these Disaster Aid community camps we can address this; wonderful!”

Ed Cox, Disaster Aid Head of Deployment and Training said, “Our goal is to rebuild and maintain communities in safe, comfortable areas. The dignity of those we assist must be our main focus, listening to them and seeing how we can help further. Working with the Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc. has

been invaluable; their compassion and drive is truly inspirational to us all on the DART team.”

On location, volunteer Rotarian DARTs Dave Tuweski (D9500) and PP Hans Van Dyk (D9820)

Rotarian and volunteer DART Dave Tuweski said after his first day of setting up the community and seeing the families move in, “I can’t describe the feeling of seeing our Family Survival boxes in action and the appreciation of the families. I’ve never experienced anything like it; I didn’t think it would hit me like this but it’s indescribable.”

Hans and Dave, meeting with members of the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro (D3870) Philippines

“I am constantly overwhelmed by the gratitude that is shown to us working here, both by those families affected by this devastating cyclone and the volunteers we are working with. To relay the words of those here on the ground to all donors from around the world, thank you for your utterly selfless donations to allow DAI to do what they do,” DART volunteer and Rotarian PP Hans Van Dyk said.

“This has been a combined multi sector approach – Catholic Relief Services has provided water for our Disaster Aid camps, Team Energy has provided internal shelter solar lighting and outside lighting, and the latrines in the camps have been provided by the regional elective Congressman Rufus Rodriguez, all through a combined approach implemented by our valued partner Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc. and Disaster Aid International,” added Hans.
